The Nilgiris : UNESCO-accredited, Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) heritage train is all set to welcome modernised new coaches from Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Perambur.

According to sources from the Southern Railway, "Unlike, the existing ones, the new coaches would be spacious enough to accommodate more passengers. Out of the 15 coaches ordered, the ICF has completed manufacturing five coaches including one first class coach and four, second class coach".

“Fitted with wide windows to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Nilgiris mountains, the coaches have been aesthetically designed to attract more tourists to travel by the toy train”, said a railway official.

He also added that "Once all the 15 coaches are manufactured, they would be despatched from ICF to Mettupalayam where they will be fitted to NMR".

While the toy train would be operated by a steam engine between Coonoor, it would be hauled up by biodiesel engines between Coonoor-Ooty section with the new coaches, the sources confirmed.
