The Children’s park in R K Nagar, Ondipudur which was constructed two years ago, hasn’t been opened for the public use till date. The negligence of Coimbatore Corporation officials has turned the park unfriendly for children and it has turned into a shelter for snakes.
The Coimbatore Corporation has built several parks in various residential areas in the city using its own funds and also under the AMRUT scheme. However, due to lack of maintenance, these parks are covered with bushes and public aren’t making use of the facilities there.
Two years ago, the Coimbatore Corporation completed the construction of Children’s park in RK Nagar, located in Ward No. 61 under Coimbatore Corporation through a contractor. Spread over an area of one acre, pathways, playing equipment, water tank, LED lights and many other facilities were built in the park. Even though the works were completed two years ago, it hasn’t been opened for public use till date. As maintenance works were not carried out all these days, the park is in a depleted state now.
Parmesh, an IT professional residing in the area for past five years said, “The Park is surrounded by the residential areas Itteri Road, Cheran Nagar, R K Nagar, Pattanam cutu road and more than 500 residences are located here. If the park had been opened, it would have been of great use to children and elderly persons in the area. But the park remains closed ever since the construction was completed and it is in a deteriorating state now.”
He added, “Though we have complained about this to Corporation Commissioner and Chief Minister through e-mail, no action has been taken till date”.
Residents complained that the park is covered with bushes and snakes from there are entering into their houses. Senior citizens said that they aren’t able to go on morning walks peacefully because of these snakes.
Also, the roads like Iteri road and Pattanam road are in bad condition and its filled with potholes. Allegedly, the contractor has locked the park as the Corporation hasn’t settled the bills yet. Residents also alleged, “Since the legislator of the constituency is from the opposition party, the ruling party is hampering the development works in this area.”
Public opined that Corporation which is keen on collecting taxes from the public should also be objective while carrying out development works.
