The PSG hospitals here has successfully performed complex epilepsy surgeries on three patients and all three patients are healthy now.
The epilepsy surgeries were performed on a 9-year-old girl, a 19-year-old boy and a 30 years old man by expert doctors in the PSG Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Centre. According to a statement, all the three patients underwent a surgical procedure called hemispherectomy, wherein one half of the brain is disconnected from the rest. Hospital sources said that all the three are doing well and are seizure-free at three months follow-up.
Dr. Rajesh Shankar Iyer, Neurologist and Epileptologist, PSG hospitals said, “These surgeries can be performed only to surgery privileged candidates only and after surgery, they can lead a quality of life for long-term and lead a normal life soon." He added that there is lack of awareness amongst the public about the surgery and its benefits.
Dr. Ramalingam, dean of PSG -IMSR and Hospitals said,” Patients undergo several evaluation tests and the ideal surgical candidates who are likely to become seizure-free after surgery are identified. Medications could also be withdrawn in a good majority of patients undergoing surgery sparing them of the side-effects of prolonged medication use.” He also said that patients who are not qualified for these surgeries will benefit from appropriate use of anti-epileptic drugs, prescribed after a comprehensive evaluation.
