The Governor has ordered a high-level inquiry into the issue. According to sources, R Santhanam, a retired IAS officer will be investigating the case. However, the Governor’s action hasn’t gone well with many. Despite the Governor’s position as the Chancellor of the University, some questioned the Governor’s authority to order such an investigation. Some even felt he was intruding into the executive powers of the State government.

Recently, Nirmala Devi, the assistant professor of a private college in Virudhunagar was arrested by police on various charges for luring four students of the college to do sexual favors for ‘High officials’ in Madurai Kamaraj University.

The assistant professor was suspended last month after four students of the college complained against the professor allegedly for luring them into do sex work for some senior officials of the Madurai Kamaraj University. An audio clip regarding this got released online yesterday.

Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor in the Mathematics Department at Devanga Arts College in Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar is allegedly heard luring four students of the college into sex work for some ‘High official’ of the Madurai Kamaraj University in the 20 minutes long audio clip. In the audio clip, the professor has allegedly said to the students that an “opportunity” has come for doing certain things “secretly” for a very senior official of the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) to which the college is affiliated.

Allegedly, Nirmala Devi is heard saying that if they agree to this, the University will act as their backbone and ensure career development. She also says that she has never stooped to this level before. However, though the students are heard denying the ‘offer’ multiple times in the clip, Nirmala Devi persuades them and asks them not to take a hasty decision. Nirmala Devi is allegedly heard seeking a promise from the students in the audio clip that they will not reveal the conversation to others.

The professor was suspended by the college on March 21st based on student’s complaint. Though Nirmala Devi agreed that it is her voice, she alleged that the students have misunderstood her words. However, the Madurai Kamaraj University officials have denied the allegations and said that this was an attempt to malign the image of the university and its officials.
