Mother elephant that stood guard over its dead calf for six days leaves finally

The Nilgiris : After six -day long standoff between forest officials and the Mother elephant which refused to leave its dead calf behind came to end, the post-mortem was performed on the body of the calf elephant and the body of calf buried.

The Mother elephant stood guard over its dead calf for six days near Pokkapuram estate area near Masinagudi in Mudumalai and prevented any one coming near the corpse of the dead calf.

However, the Mother elephant finally left the dead calf today and forest department officials retrieved and buried calf after postmortem. The death of the calf is attributed to natural causes by Veterinarian Umesh.
