More than 40 temporary sheds were gutted after seven LPG cylinders exploded one after another at a migrant workers’ colony in Coimbatore’s Nava India area. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, as most of the workers had gone to work at the time of the incident.
Coimbatore: A major fire broke out at temporary quarters for migrant construction workers in Coimbatore’s Nava India area after seven LPG cylinders reportedly exploded one after another. More than 40 temporary sheds were gutted in the fire, while no casualties or injuries were reported.
A private construction company had set up more than 40 temporary sheds in the area, where over 500 migrant workers from northern states were staying and working.
The incident occurred today when most of the workers had gone to work. According to reports, an LPG cylinder kept inside one of the sheds suddenly exploded. The fire quickly spread to the adjoining sheds, triggering a series of explosions as six more cylinders caught fire and exploded.
With seven cylinders exploding one after another, flames engulfed the quarters and the area was covered in thick smoke. On receiving information, more than 30 firefighters from the Peelamedu and Coimbatore South Fire and Rescue Services stations rushed to the spot in four fire tenders.
The firefighters broke open the temporary sheds and battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. As most of the workers were away at work and those present managed to move to safety immediately, a major tragedy was averted.
Police and Fire and Rescue Services officials confirmed that no one was injured or killed in the incident. However, the series of LPG cylinder explosions and the destruction of more than 40 temporary sheds caused panic in the area.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
