Following heavy rain and strong winds in Coimbatore today evening, a section of the compound wall near Coimbatore International Airport collapsed at Chinniyampalayam, leading to temporary diversion of flights to Kochi as a precautionary safety measure.
Coimbatore: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Coimbatore on Wednesday evening, resulting in trees and branches falling in multiple locations across the city.
Amid the adverse weather conditions, a portion of the compound wall near the Chinniyampalayam side of the Coimbatore International Airport premises reportedly collapsed, triggering safety concerns in the vicinity of the runway approach area.
Following the incident, a few flights bound for Coimbatore were temporarily diverted to Kochi as a precautionary measure, according to airport sources.
CISF personnel have been deployed in the affected area to strengthen security and regulate movement while restoration and safety assessment works are underway.
Airport sources stated that the situation is expected to return to normal after 9.30 pm, following which flight operations at Coimbatore International Airport are likely to resume as usual.
