Chennai: Udhayanidhi Stalin, DMK Youth Wing Secretary and MLA from the Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni constituency, is set to assume office as the new Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The DMK has officially announced that he has been unanimously elected Leader of the DMK Legislature Party.
With TVK president C. Joseph Vijay taking oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu today (May 10), Udhayanidhi Stalin is expected to formally assume his role as Leader of the Opposition during the first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, scheduled to convene tomorrow, May 11.
In the recently concluded Assembly elections, Udhayanidhi Stalin retained the Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency, while the DMK secured victory in only 59 constituencies, resulting in the party losing power to the TVK, which emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats.
Additionally, the defeat of DMK president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to TVK candidate V.S. Babu in the Kolathur constituency came as a major setback for the party and drew significant attention across political circles.
Following the election results, speculation intensified over who would be chosen to lead the DMK Legislature Party and subsequently assume the role of Leader of the Opposition.
Against this backdrop, a meeting of DMK MLAs was held on the evening of May 7 at Kalaignar Arangam in Anna Arivalayam, Chennai, under the leadership of M.K. Stalin. Several key resolutions were adopted during the meeting.
Subsequently, Udhayanidhi Stalin was unanimously elected Leader of the DMK Legislature Party, paving the way for him to serve as the Leader of the Opposition.
