1.5 tons of iron products to be used for Avinashi-Athikkadavu project robbed - 5 arrested

The stolen 1.5 tonnes of iron products and the lorry used for the smuggling were also seized.


Coimbatore: A complaint had been lodged with the Annur police that about 1.5 tonnes of iron products kept for the Avinashi-Athikkadavu project has been stolen.

The Avinashi-Athikkadavu project is in full swing in Annur and its environs in Coimbatore district. As a part of this, the construction work of the 6th pumping station at Kunnathurampalayam near Annur is being carried out under the watch of Sibiarasan (29) from Bhavanisagar area of Erode district.

He had yesterday reported to the Annur police that about 1.5 tonnes of iron products kept for the Avinashi-Athikadavu project in his charge had been stolen.



Police, who have filed a case on the complaint, have been casting a net for the thieves who have stolen iron goods. The Annur police were engaged in intensive patrolling on Thennapalayam road today.

At that time, 5 persons who came through were taken to the police station on suspicion and a serious investigation was carried out. They were identified as Venkata Krishnan (25), Prasanth (24) of Pennagaram, Dharmapuri district, Gautham (24) of Tiruchengode area of Namakkal district, Naveen (25) and Bhupathi (25) of Vazhappadi, Salem district. During the investigation the theft of Avinashi-Athikkadavu project materials was revealed.

It is also learned that Prasanth worked as a guard at the Kunnathurampalayam pumping station of the Avinashi-Athikkadavu project and the others were his friends.



1.5 tonnes of iron goods stolen from them and the lorry used for the smuggling were also confiscated. The police arrested them, produced them in court and remanded them in custody. The incident has caused a stir in the area.
