"Kovaipudur temporary playground to be upgraded to international standards soon:" TN Sports Minister, V Meyyanathan

A tender has been announced for a new synthetic track at Nehru Stadium worth Rs. 6.45 lakh crore which is expected to be completed within the next three months.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Sports Minister, V Meyyanathan inspected the playground in Kovaipudur on Tuesday and interacted with the boys playing there regarding their needs and grievances.

Speaking to reporters later, V Meyyanathan said, "A temporary playground for the use of sportspersons has been set up on 10 acres in the Kovaipudur area of Coimbatore district and is in use. In the future, an international standard playground will be set up for the use of young athletes in the area. Also, in order to protect the environment and for people who exercise in the morning and evening to breathe in good air, mini forests will be set up. Arrangements will be made for the supply of saplings by the Department of Environment while setting up these mini forests."

Responding to a query regarding damage to tracks at Coimbatore Nehru Stadium and in the RS Puram area, the Minister said, "We have announced a tender at Nehru Stadium and are looking at setting up a new synthetic track worth Rs. 6.45 lakh crore. The work will be completed within the next three months. New toilet facilities will also be provided. Similarly, the hockey ground in the RS Puram area has been put on hold after the last regime spent Rs. 5 crore. Of this, 4.90 lakh crore have been wasted. Under the Smart City Project, work costing Rs.19.40 lakh crore was undertaken to set up a hockey field. Due to high voltage power lines near the hockey ground, there was the risk of catching fire. Steps will be taken to move the high power lines in the area, underground. Coimbatore has a lot of hockey players. In the future, this ground will be used to produce good hockey players," he added.

Sports Minister V Meyyanathan also added, "According to Government School students, 25 lakh athletes have emerged ever since the Chief Minister, M K Stalin took charge. The Chief Minister has taken various measures to improve the sports sector. Accordingly, under Rule 10, it is planned to construct a playground in Chennai at an estimated cost of Rs.3 crores. In addition, 4 Olympic Academies will be created. We are taking steps to build new playgrounds in Tamil Nadu. Overall, we are taking action to benefit all athletes. Steps will be taken by the Department of Higher Education and School Education to give emphasis to sports for students. In addition, rural players also excel in the field of sports, and hence the Olympic gold medal search program has been started and Rs. 25 crores has been allocated for it,” detailed the Minister.
