Areas comprising Coimbatore district, Sulur circle, J Krishnapuram village, areas under Salaipudur substation which were to get one lakh free electricity connections as announced by the Government of Tamil Nadu had not been provided for. The farmers alleged that false information had been furnished to the Government and photos of unrelated persons had been uploaded on the official website of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.
A total of 330 farmers in the village of Salaipudur under the Palladam Electricity Distribution Office had been selected to be provided with free electricity connection. According to the website, 217 people's homes will be connected in the first phase and 192 users will be connected thereon.
But thus far, more than 100 farmers have not been provided with the connection for electricity. Hence, the farmers protested against the Palladam Electricity Board officials for the blatant negligence and demanded that appropriate action be taken against them.
In the last three days alone, 73 farmers have been provided with emergency power supply after the Palladam Electricity Board were informed that a series of sit-in protests would be held on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Protection Association in front of the EB office until the demands for immediate connection to all chosen farmers are met.
Even as the executives of the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Protection Association and farmers engaged in a series of sit-in protests and also laid siege to the Palladam Power Distribution Office on Friday, Engineer Rathinakumar intervened to speak to the farmers. The farmers alleged that the power plant officials had given false information to the Tamil Nadu Government and that electricity connections were accounted for by giving the same number to two people, for a link.
The Chief Engineer then assured the farmers that appropriate action would be taken in this regard. The farmers demanded that immediate action should be taken to provide electricity to all farmers and that the commitment should be given to them in writing. The protesting farmers dispersed only after the engineer agreed to their demand.
