Police arrest father for throwing his newborn from moving train

Coimbatore: The baby was killed when the father threw the baby out of a moving train, following a dispute between the husband and wife regarding the DNA of the baby.

Coimbatore: A woman who called the Coimbatore City Police control room last night complained that her husband had tried to beat her to death and thereafter left her in a locked room in the city's Ramanathapuram area.

Police patrolling the Ramanathapuram area were alerted and immediately rushed to the spot. They rescued the injured woman and admitted her to the Coimbatore Government Hospital.

In the first phase of the investigation, it was revealed that Mariselvam and Kavitha hailed from Kadayanallur in Tenkasi district. Mariselvam has reportedly been involved in frequent disputes with his wife due to his suspicious nature. Mariselvam arrived in Coimbatore on April 30 with his wife Kavitha to open a biryani shop in Coimbatore. Kavitha was full-term pregnant and both were living in a lodge in Ramanathapuram area.

When Kavitha began labour pains on May 1, she was admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital where she gave birth to a baby girl by Caesarean section. Kavitha, who was undergoing treatment for three days, was then discharged from the hospital on May 3 and Mariselvam escorted her and the baby back to her hometown. Owing to the child being unwell, a few days ago, Mariselvam boarded the Nagercoil Express to Coimbatore on May 13 along with Kavitha and the newborn.

Kavitha and Mariselvam reportedly got into a heated argument on the train with regard to suspicions about the baby, and Kavitha is said to have retaliated that DNA testing proof was adequate to allay any suspicions. Even as the train was running between Madurai and Dindigul, Mariselvam reportedly snatched the baby from Kavitha's hand and threw the baby out of the running train.

He later attacked Kavitha and brought her back injured to the lodge in Ramanathapuram area in Coimbatore, and kept her in a locked room. Kavitha who had been in the room for the past four days had fainted on Tuesday night. Mariselvam, who thought Kavitha was dead, locked the room and fled.

On regaining consciousness, Kavitha informed the Coimbatore City Police Control Room. The Ramanathapuram police were alerted and rushed to the scene. They rescued Kavitha and sent her to the hospital for treatment.

The police also registered a case in this regard against Mariselvam and also arrested him. Investigations are underway regarding the murder of the innocent newborn by the father.
