Coimbatore’s Vellalore Garbage Depot has decided to send 200 tons of garbage daily to process in cement factories

This is a 50-ton increase from the previous level of 150-tonnes sent to cement factories. Vellalore landfill in Coimbatore has not cleared several lakh metric tonnes of rubbish on about 66 acres for the past 10 years. The corporation administration took action to destroy it through bio-mining and as a result, 16-acres of compostable and non-compostable waste has been cleared now.

Coimbatore: Corporation officials have decided to send 200 tonnes of garbage daily to cement factories through the Vellalore landfill.

Between 800 and 1000 tons of garbage is collected daily from the 100-ward areas under the Coimbatore Corporation and sent to the Vellalore Garbage Depot.

This includes composting and non-composting waste, which can lead to methane gas emissions and fires at the Vellalore landfill. To prevent this and to reduce the amount of garbage brought to the Vellalore landfill, it is planned to set up small recycling centers at 69-micro composting centers in areas under the Corporation including Koundampalayam, Ondipudur and Ukkadam.

More than 5 centers have been set up and are operational. Meanwhile, the Vellalore landfill in Coimbatore has not cleared several lakh metric tonnes of rubbish on about 66 acres for the past 10 years. The corporation administration took action to destroy it through bio-mining.

As a result, 16-acres of compostable and non-compostable waste has been cleared. Work is also underway to clear the remaining rubbish. In this situation, up to 150 tons of garbage is sent daily from the Vellalore landfill for fuel use to private cement factories in Ariyalur district. Now the plan is to increase this.

According to a corporation official, “Up to 150-tonnes of waste sorted daily from the Vellalore landfill for fuel use is sent to cement plants by lorries. In order to increase this it has been decided to send up to 200 tons of garbage daily. With this, the garbage at the Vellalore landfill will be reduced soon.”
