Rajapaksa resigns in Sri Lanka: celebrations with fireworks in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Riots erupted across Sri Lanka following the assassination hysteria propagated by supporters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa directed toward the protesters against the Sri Lankan government.

More than a hundred people were injured in the riots, a nationwide curfew was imposed and the Sri Lankan army was deployed to assist the police to bring the situation under control. Amid a series of protests, Rajapaksa resigned. He is also said to have boarded a private helicopter and escaped.

The house of Mahinda Rajapaksa was set on fire during the riots in Sri Lanka on Monday. Given the situation, the left-wing and progressive organizations in Coimbatore exploded firecrackers in celebration of his resignation.
