A field inspection was carried out yesterday under the direction of the District Revenue Officer regarding the work of making the Sundarapuram-Madukkarai road a four-lane road. The restoration and improvement of this road is set to begin next week.
Coimbatore: Roads have been dug in the Coimbatore district for various projects such as sewerage, rainwater drainage, drinking water projects, pipeline connections, gas pipe connections, and optical piper cable connections.
Especially the Coimbatore Sundarapuram - Madukkarai road has been in a very bad condition for the last year. The terrible state of this road is due to the heavy rains in the year and the fact that it has not been repaired for many years.
Prime locations such as SIDCO factories, government, and private schools, and private colleges are located in this area. It takes over 20 minutes to cover a distance of just 2.5 km because the road is not well maintained. It causes great inconveniences to school and college students, workers, and the general public.
Poorly maintained roads often lead to accidents and waterlogging especially during the rainy season. The City Corporation and the State Highways Department have allocated special funds for the rehabilitation of roads in Coimbatore. On behalf of the State Highways Department, funds have been allotted for the rehabilitation of 16 roads at a cost of Rs.140 crore and a tender has been issued on the same.

In the last few days, this road has been measured and the markings have been drawn for the leveling of this road by the State Highways Department. That’s when it was revealed that petrol stations, bakeries, and shops had encroached on the areas where the road ought to be laid.
Many of these buildings, more than half, have to be demolished. Under these circumstances, the Revenue Department, headed by Coimbatore DRO, Leela Alex, conducted a field inspection in person on this road. “In a couple of days, the task of removing the occupants will begin”, informed the revenue officials.
Starting at Sundarapuram, and extending to a good 1.8 km, this road will be converted from a two-lane to a four-lane road. It will feature a 1.8 km long center median. In addition, rainwater drainage along the sidewalk and a small bridge will be constructed in this area.
