Coimbatore: A tender has been sought to construct an underground sewer at a cost of Rs 285 crore.

In 2011 the Corporation of Coimbatore was expanded to include 3 Municipalities, 7 Town Panchayat and one. The project to construct underground sewers under the Amrut project is being carried out only in the areas which were the municipalities of Kurichi and Kuniyamuthur in the south region of the corporation.

A sewage treatment plant is being constructed in Vellalore. However, the under ground sewerage project has not been implemented for more than 10 years in the connecting areas of Kavundampalayam, Vadavalli, Veerakeralam, Thudiyalur, Kalapatti, Vellakkinaru, Chinnavedampatti, Saravanampatti Municipalities and Vilankurichi Grama Panchayat. As the above mentioned areas are growing, the lack of sewerage is greatly affecting the residents. Demands for continued construction of underground sewers in the area are also growing.

Following this, it was stated in this year's corporation budget that funds would be allocated from the Asian Bank budget for the construction of underground sewers in these areas. A tender of Rs. 285 crore was issued for the construction of underground sewers in Vadavalli, Veerakeralam, Kavundampalayam and Thudiyalur areas.

Following this, the tender will be opened tomorrow. The Tamil Nadu Drinking Water Drainage Board is to carry out this work. Work is expected to be expedited following the decision on the tender tomorrow.
