Singanallur Lake illegal fishing: Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner to appear in Chennai High Court today..!

Corporation Commissioner Rajagopal Sunkara appeared in the Chennai High Court in a case filed against him for allowing fishing in the Singanallur pond and not removing encroachments.


Coimbatore: The Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation appeared in the Chennai High Court today.

The Singanallur Pond, maintained by the Corporation of Coimbatore, covers an area of 288 acres. A study by nature lovers in the area found the presence of 120 species of flora and fauna.

Therefore, the pond has been declared as an Urban Biodiversity Conservation Zone by the Corporation of Coimbatore. Fishing was done illegally in the lake despite several reports highlighting the blatant misuse and also construction debris was dumped.

A case was filed in the Chennai High Court in 2019 by an individual alleging that fish was also traded near the pond. Following the hearing of the case on the 18th of last month in the presence of Chief Justice Bharath Chakaravarthy, the Coimbatore Corporation was fined Rs 10,000 and Coimbatore Corporation Commissionerordered to appear in person before the court.

Meanwhile, a group called 'Cube', which has been researching birds and plants in the Singanallur area, had filed a petition seeking permission to plant saplings, which has now been granted by the High Court.
