Heavy thunderstorms uproot banana plantations in Coimbatore leaving farmers distressed

Over 20,000 banana plants were uprooted by heavy rains accompanied by strong winds in various parts of Coimbatore district, including Lingapuram and Mokkaimedu.

Coimbatore: Heavy rains along with thunderstorms in and around Sirumugai near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district resulted in more than 100 acres of cultivated bananas being destroyed, leaving farmers deeply distressed.

Banana is cultivated on more than 100 acres of land, in various areas including Lingapuram, Mokkaimedu, Kandavayal and Palapatti near Sirumugai. Various varieties of bananas are being cultivated, especially Kathali, Nendran, Poovan and Sevvalai (Red Banana).

In the last few days, more than 20,000 bananas planted in areas including Lingapuram and Mokkaimedu have been uprooted due to torrential rains in and around Mettupalayam.

"Agriculture as an occupation is being wiped out by the menace of wild elephants, inflation in the price of fertilizers, and natural calamities including rain and wind. As a result, we are in a dilemma of not being able to repay the loans we have taken for agriculture," lamented farmers in the region. They have now demanded that the Government should provide appropriate relief when a loss is incurred due to such unavoidable circumstances.
