The police halted them from proceeding further and an argument broke out between the police and the CPM party cadres.
Coimbatore: Even though the City Police had removed the 40-year-old flagpole of the Marxist Communist Party which had been erected on VKK Menon Road, Sidhapudur in Coimbatore, senior and key executives of the CPM party hoisted the party flag on a newly-erected flagpole on Tuesday on account of Labour Day.
On May 1, some members of the CPM party were preparing the flagpole when the police led by Kattoor Police Inspector Latha warned them to remove the flagpole. Following the temporary removal of the flagpole by the party workers, more party workers rallied in the same area on Tuesday morning with the General Secretary of the Abolition of Untouchability Front, U K Sivagnanam and District Secretary of the Indian Students Union, Dinesh Kumar to try and restore the 40-year-old flagpole.
The police halted them from proceeding further and an argument broke out between the police and the CPM party cadres.
But the party cadres erected the flagpole and hoisted the flag and left the spot. There was commotion for a while in the area and the police stayed back to maintain a vigil for some time.
