Small scale vegetable vendors from Coimbatore march to Chennai; shops promised year ago yet to be handed over

The small scale vegetable and fruit vendors who used to sell through shops set up on platforms are marching with their families to Chennai as they have not received their shops that was promised a year ago.

Coimbatore: Vegetable vendors are marching towards Chennai from Coimbatore seeking that facilities be made for them to set up shops, as promised a year ago

The previous AIADMK government had promised to set up shops in the vacant plot of land in the TK market area of the Big Bazaar Street in Coimbatore, where small vendors had been selling vegetables and fruits for the past several years. But before the shops could be distributed to the traders, elections were announced. The change in government led to a halt in the process and the Coimbatore Corporation issued a notice to take over the shops through tenders.

Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore Press Club, the Vegetable Small Traders' Association said that the families of 88 traders were facing difficulties as they could not do business for the past one year. They also demanded that the tender shops be allotted to traders.

The vendors also alleged that the Municipal Commissioner hurled abuses at them and evicted them as they approached to speak to him of the issue. The traders said they along with their families would go on a padayatra from Anna Salai in Coimbatore to Anna Samadhi in Chennai on May 5 to submit a petition to the Chief Minister demanding allotment of shops to them.

The vendors are also planning for an attention seeking protest on the 30th, and demanded that the Chief Minister take appropriate action.
