Coimbatore: A regional level school education seminar covering Coimbatore, Tirupur, Nilgiris, Karur and Erode districts was held at Peelamedu PSG College, Coimbatore.

Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh, Coimbatore South Assembly member BJP's women's wing leader Vanathi Srinivasan and school education officials were present.

Speaking at the meeting, Vanathi Srinivasan urged the state government to approach the new education policy with an open mind. The new education policy by Union Government would help improve the learning process, adding that there were many good things in the new education policy and that the good things in it should be available to our state beyond the politics.

Speaking later, Minister Anbil Mahesh said that the recent incidents in some schools were a matter of concern and to avoid this, we were trying to impart psychology and biology education to the students. He urged the district and chief education officers to engage in a series of inspections in schools and take immediate action in the event of such untoward incidents.

He said that teachers should try to solve the problem as there will be little hesitation on the part of the students as the examination period has started and he advised the students to get used to using the library more and make plans for the future welfare of the students.

Steps are being taken to set up about 7,000 smart classrooms in Tamil Nadu and some school buildings have been demolished to avoid any untoward incidents. He advised teachers not to keep schools open for that and to rent temporary buildings to hold school classes.

He said that about 6 lakh children were dependent on government schools and basic facilities should be made available to them and continuous research should be done to see if the students were aware of basic education. He then asked the opposition MLAs to file petitions regarding the facilities required for education in their area and get those facilities.

He later told reporters that the situation at the zonal level and the improvement in the quality of education were being discussed at the zonal level and that the views expressed by the legislators present in each zone would be taken into consideration. He said such suggestions would help the sector understand what it needs, adding that the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has announced several projects in the last 11 months.

He said the study revealed that 12,300 school buildings were dilapidated in Tamil Nadu and that they were focusing on demolishing them and constructing new ones. He said the IAS and IPS conference had given guidance that change should start at school, adding that their activities were changing as students had been without learning for two years.

He said that we have prevented a lot of mistakes from being made by the students and there is a feeling that we have to see to it that it does not happen again. He said the suspension of students who exceed the limit is to ensure that other students do not make mistakes. He said other students would not do it unless they were reprimanded when students exceeded the limit, adding that recently suspended students were allowed to write the exam.

He said that the new education policy is the view of MLA Vanathi Srinivasan and as far as the Tamil Nadu government is concerned, the state education policy is the position and we will show our initiative in implementing this. He said the school education department would be bound by the decisions of the Chief Minister's Office regarding the spread of coronavirus again.

He said that our position was a bilingual policy, adding that Rs 30 crore had been allocated to set up an English lab and that none of the projects brought in by the previous regime to bring in the AIADMK, which is a department that should not look at the politics of education, would be stopped. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyamozhi said that students writing the general examination should write the exam with courage and happiness.
