Kerala to increase bus, auto, taxi fares from May 1 as a result of fuel hike

The increase in fares comes in the wake of the fuel price hike which has caused a subsequent rise in the price of essential commodities.


Coimbatore: Public in Kerala will feel the pinch of increased fares in auto, buses and cabs from May 1. The continuous rise in the prices of petrol and diesel has caused the prices of essential commodities to go up as well.

Owing to rising fuel prices, there was a demand in Kerala for a hike in bus, auto and taxi fares. The Kerala Cabinet has now approved the fare hike at its meeting held on Wednesday. Accordingly, the hike in bus, auto and taxi fares in Kerala will come into effect from May 1.

The fare has been increased from Rs.8 to Rs.10 for a distance of 2.5 km in buses, and has also increased from 90 paise to Rs. 1 for every additional km. Similarly, the fares of express buses, high-speed buses and deluxe buses belonging to the Kerala Transport Corporation will be changed accordingly.

Auto fares have also been hiked from Rs.25 to Rs.30 per 1.5 km. Thereon, it will be increased from Rs.12 to Rs.15 for every km. The call taxi fare has also been increased from Rs.175 to Rs.200. For high-speeding taxis, it has been increased from Rs.200 to Rs.225 and for an additional km from Rs.15 to Rs.18.

Meanwhile, some student organisations have condemned the hike in bus, taxi and auto fares.
