Smart City project in Coimbatore; Rs 719 crores spent till date in 6 years

The Smart city project officials in Coimbatore upon responding to the Accounts Committee head's question on the expenses done under Smart city project so far, stated that an amount of Rs 719.22 has been spent since 2016 for the developmental works.

Deepa Thalapathy Ilango,councillor of the 59th ward of the Coimbatore Corporation, has taken over as the Chairman of the Accounts Committee. Deepa had raised questions on the expenditure in smart city works here following the accounts committee meeting held at the Coimbatore Corporation Council.

According to the Smart City officials, "The smart city project was launched in 2016 and Rs 490 crore has been released from the Centre and Rs 500 crore by the state government. As per the present stand, 56 works have been planned at a cost of Rs 978.73 crore under smart city project and currently 32 works have been completed under a fund of Rs 24.05 crore."

Further Rs 478.17 crore is proposed to be spent on 14 works in progress. A sum of Rs.16.74 crore has been allocated for 10 new works to be taken up, he added. Rs 150 crore is being spent on the 24-hour water supply scheme alone.

Subsequently, he added that a white report has been on the expenditure incurred so far. She said that the decision in this regard will be communicated after consulting the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner.-check
