Collector lauds kin of brain dead youth from Valparai for donating organs to transform other lives

Organs including his kidneys, liver and eyes are to be donated to different people in need in Coimbatore.



Coimbatore: The family of a 23-year-old brain dead youth donated his organs to transform the lives of many.

Hariharan, a 23-year-old boy from Mudi's Nagar in Valparai was admitted to the Valparai Government Hospital on March 16 after he was injured in a road accident when a wild cow disrupted his path.

He was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment on March 17. A team comprising a brain surgeon, anesthetist, cardiologist and other intensive care doctors treated him as per the instructions of the Hospital Dean.

However, Hariharan succumbed to hid injuries this morning and Hariharan's relatives were asked about organ donation to which his family consented. Accordingly, one of Hariharan's kidneys is to be donated to a patient undergoing dialysis treatment at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore while the other kidney will be donated to a patient undergoing continuous dialysis treatment at the Salem Government Hospital. Hariharan's liver is to be donated to a private hospital in Coimbatore, while his eyes will be donated to two patients undergoing treatment at Aravind Eye Hospital.



District Collector G S Sameeran who heard about the family's consent to donate the youth's organs visited the Coimbatore Government Hospital in person and met Hariharan's mother and relatives and consoled them.



He also thanked the family for agreeing to the organ donation and then laid a wreath on Hariharan's body and garlanded it.



Nirmala, Dean, Coimbatore Government Hospital and other doctors were present during the Collector's visit.



Hariharan's body was then shifted to his residence.

Earlier in the day, the relatives of the youth had requested the Coimbatore District Collector to take appropriate action with regard to the allegation that treatment was delayed and improper at the Valparai Government Hospital.



The District Collector assured the family that appropriate action would be taken.
