Thanjavur man dies after falling unconscious at Velliangiri second hill in Coimbatore

A labourer based in Thanjavur hiking the Velliangiri hills in Coimbatore died of loss of breath as he climbed the second hill on Friday. A case has been registered and investigations are being done.


Coimbatore:A 50-year-old man who had hiked the Velliangiri hills in Coimbatore died of loss of breath on Friday on the second hill.

Police are investigating the death of a 50-year-old in Thanjavur district who climbed the Velliangiri hills in Poondi in Coimbatore due to suffocation.

Karikalan (50) hails from Thanjavur district. He worked in a private restaurant and left his job six months ago and stayed at home.He had come to Coimbatore along with his friend Rajasekhar on the 13th of this month for the hill climbing at Poondi Velliangiri in Coimbatore.

Reportedly, Karikalan and Rajsekhar, on Friday morning, trekked the Velliangir hills. While climbing the second hill, Karikalan seems to have developed a mild shortness of breath and fainted. When the co-trekkers checked on him, Karikalan had already died.

They immediately informed the forest department and the police. Following this, the body of Karikalan was recovered and brought to the foot of the hill. Following this, the police sent his body to Coimbatore government hospital for postmortem.

A case has also been registered in connection with the incident and an investigation is underway.
