Cheran Ma Nagar residents in Coimbatore raise complaints of health hazards, disrupted water supply

However, Corporation sources clarify that dearth of resources including lack of sufficient garbage, cleaning equipments and manpower are the reasons for the current scenario prevailing in Cheran Ma Nagar.

Coimbatore: Residents in Cheran Ma Magar which comes under Ward No.22 of Coimbatore Corporation have raised serious concerns of irregularities in clearing garbage, sewers and disrupted water supply.

Seeking immediate attention on the over-pending issues, the residents fear of health hazards as garbage and sewers are not cleared regularly. They also highlighted the plight of many residents buying water from private water suppliers due to the prevailing irregularity in water supply.

Briefing the issue, Sundararajan, President of the Cheran Ma Nagar Residents' Welfare Association said, "There are 568 houses in Cheran Ma Nagar. Earlier, the garbage were collected from the houses on alternative days and the sewers were cleaned every 10 days. But of late, garbage is collected only once a week and the drains are cleaned only once a month.

These irregularities has resulted in health hazards in Cheran Ma Nagar and surrounding areas. The entire Cheran Ma Nagar residential area has been well-equipped with a sewerage system. However, due to lack of proper maintenance work for many years, the sewage is blocked thereby interrupting the flow of water into the drain causing water stagnation.

He also added that drinking water which had been supplied twice a week has now been reduced to only once a week. "Water is supplied overtime in the surrounding areas and there is notable wastage too. The Corporation should take steps to ensure smooth supply of drinking water in all the residential areas of Cheran Ma Nagar and surrounding areas without any discrimination", he added.

According to Corporation sources, there are a total of 8,700 tenements in the 22nd Ward but there are only 27 sanitation workers with an obvious shortage of 15 safai karamcharis. "Apart from this, the trolleys that are currently provided for carrying garbage are also in a dilapidated condition. 12 new trolleys are needed to remove them. Above all, there is a huge shortage of equipment required for sanitation works.

At least 30 equipment are required for sewerage, as well as 30 garden forks and 30 brooms along with an additional Tata Ace Vehicle apart from the existing one. With so much support needed, the sanitation workers still continue cleaning in their Wards as much as possible. If all the required equipments are provided, the entire Ward 22 will be thoroughly cleaned in a balanced manner.

Water is being supplied twice a week in Cheran Ma Nagar residential area. If there is any breach in the main pipeline, the water supply will be affected only that week. And, will resume back after the repairs are rectified", clarified a source from the Corporation in response to the concerns raised by the Cheran Ma Nagar residents.
