AITUC members arrested for unannounced protest at Coimbatore Collectorate

Police officials at the District Collectorate arrested AITUC members who had arrived to submit a petition with various demands and staging a protest without obtaining prior police permission.


Coimbatore: AITUC members who arrived at the Coimbatore Collectorate to submit a petition were arrested for staging an unannounced protest.



The police officials at the Collectorate arrested the AITUC activists who had arrived at the Collectorate to submit a petition in connection with various demands regarding the construction workers. The activists had suddenly raised slogans of protest in front of the District Collectorate and carried placards with their demands written on them.



The Tamil Nadu AITUC Building Workers Association who arrived at the Collectorate to submit the petition were led by the State Deputy General Secretary Selvaraj. The petition stated various demands including the retirement age of women construction workers to be reduced to 50 years.

"All these registered workers, who have completed 60 years of age during the previous DMK regime, should be adequately paid. A monthly pension of Rs.6,000 has to be paid, with Rs.5 lakh compensation for any natural death and Rs.10 lakh for death in an accident. The Board should also bear the entire educational expenses of the children and facilitate measures for medical treatment at the ESI Hospital," urged Selvaraj.



More than 50 members of the Coimbatore District AITUC Construction Workers Union were arrested and taken away by the police after they suddenly raised slogans on the road near the Collectorate, without obtaining prior permission from the police. The incident caused a stir in the area near the Collectorate, for a while.
