Request for new building for Councillors meeting deferred; Council meeting to be continued at Victoria Hall

Mubaseera, the ward 82 councillor speaking at the first meeting held yesterday, 11th April, a ward councillor demanded a new building for council meetings. Most councillors voiced against this option citing historical value of Victoria Hall in Coimbatore.

The Coimbatore Corporation's Council meeting is being held at the Victoria Hall. The first ordinary meeting was held on Monday, 11th April, led by corporation Mayor Kalpana. the elected councillors of all 100 wards have begun their duties, and attending the meeting, they put forth the grievances of their respective wards.

Mubaseera, the ward 82 councillor, who is also the chairman of the Taxation and Finance Committee, said a new building be constructed for the councillors for the council meeting. However, most councillors opined that the Council meeting has to be held in Victoria Hall, as it holds much historic value.

Speaking on the occasion, CPI(M) member Ramamurthy said, "This building is 130 years old. The Prime Minister of the country has visited the monument, Kamarajar visited the place during his tenure as Chief Minister. Therefore, it is special that a council meeting is held here and there is no need for a new building,".

North zone president Kathirvel added that the Mayor shall think of bringing a new Council Building after two years.

Congress Councillor Gayatri said that they were ready to be seated in wooden platform and participate in the meeting, and the funds that will be used for the new building, can be used for meeting the needs of the public.
