Pharmacy owner arrested in Coimbatore for supplying drugs to youth

City police arrested the pharmacy owner in Coimbatore who had been supplying pain relief tablets to the youth and lodged him at the Central prison.


Coimbatore: The city police arrested a pharmacy owner in Coimbatore who had been supplying pain relief tablets to the youth. The arrested pharmacy owner had been running the shop without a license for the past five years.



City Police received a tip-off that youth in Ganapathi, Rathinapuri, Saravanampatti and other areas in Coimbatore were using drugs and that painkillers were being supplied to them for excessive intoxication. Following this, the Rathinapuri police formed a monitoring team and conducted an inspection at various places. The police nabbed a youth with a tablet box in his hand near Omni Bus Stand on Sathi Main Road in Coimbatore.

Dhanasekaran (28), a resident of Ganapathi Subhash Nagar in Coimbatore revealed in the preliminary investigation that he was selling painkillers to the youth for intoxication purposes. He also confessed that he had been running a medical shop for the past five years without a valid license. He also used to sell painkillers in boxes meant for post-opertive use to young people for intoxication. The youngsters who used to buy these tablets were retailing them to other youngsters as well.

It is stated that the youth bought the tablets and mixed them with glucose to inject them into the body. Dhanasekaran had also been in touch with certain youth through mobile phones to sell tablets. A box of tablets was sold for Rs.3,000 to Rs.4,000. The police inspected Dhanasekaran's medical shop after questioning him. Around 8,400 tablets were found in 35 boxes which were worth Rs. 1 lakh.

Police seized the drugs and arrested Dhanasekaran, produced him before a magistrate and lodged him in Coimbatore Central Jail. The police have also decided to conduct raids at medical shops across Coimbatore city and warned that strict action will be taken against the owners of medical shops selling painkillers without proper permission and doctor's prescription.
