DMK Councillors attempt to attack AIADMK Councillors during first Council Ordinary Meeting in Coimbatore

The clash broke out between DMK and AIADMK members when DMK Councillors tried to silence the latter for raising objections regarding the property hike decision by the State Government.

Coimbatore: DMK Councillors attempted to attack AIADMK Councillors during the first Council Ordinary Meeting held in Coimbatore on Monday.

The clash broke out when the AIADMK Councillors raised objections with regard to the State Government's decision of hike in property tax.

The first Council Ordinary Meeting of the Coimbatore Corporation was held at Victoria Hall in the heart of the city.

AIADMK members arrived for the meeting dressed in black to protest against the 100 per cent hike in property tax. The DMK Councillors got into an argument with the AIADMK members when they raised slogans stating that the people of Coimbatore should not be deceived.

A clash broke out with DMK Councillors attempting to attack the AIADMK Councillors. Fellow members had to intervene for both sides to pacify and take them aside.

Citing the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M K Stalin's father late Kalaignar Karunanidhi's statement that those in power should not use their power to collect taxes, the ADMK Councillors stated that the DMK men had tried to attack them for questioning the hike in property tax. "But there's nothing happening here in line with Kalaignar's words. Is this the Dravidian model?" questioned the opposition party wanting DMK to justify the increase in taxes. The tax collection this year reportedly accounts for Rs.350 crores and hence the ADMK Councillors accused the DMK of behaving like a private financial institution.

The ADMK cadres also added that they would strive for people's welfare and raised their voices at the meeting for the same. Stating that the DMK Councillors were reading their speeches exactly like the Chief Minister's statements justifying the tax hike, the ADMK Councillors stated that a prior notice would have helped and such an uninformed hike was unacceptable.

Meanwhile, when Prabhakaran, an AIADMK Councillor from Ward number 47 raised a debate on doubts surrounding the property tax at the meeting, the Coimbatore Central Zone President, Meena Loku opposed him and argued that it was because of the mismanagement of the previous ADMK regime.

This was followed by an uproar by all the DMK members who gheraoed Councillor Prabhakaran. Subsequently, all three AIADMK Councillors boycotted the ordinary meeting of the house.
