83-year-old dies in bizarre fire accident in Coimbatore while cooking with firewood

The 83-year-old lady was boiling water using firewood at her home when her clothes suddenly caught fire.


Coimbatore: An 83-year-old woman died in a kitchen fire accident in Sirumugai area of Coimbatore.

The elderly woman was admitted to a hospital in Coimbatore with 90 percent burn injuries but succuumbed despite treatment. The lady reportedly suffered burn injuries when her clothes caught fire while cooking with firewood, near Sirumugai in Coimbatore.

Nanjundan hails from Sirumugai Ilagampalayam in Coimbatore. His wife Rajammal (83) lives with her younger son Nagaraj. Two days ago, Nagaraj had to be admitted at a hospital due to ill health and Rajammal who was alone in the house at that time used firewood to start a fire to boil water.

Rajammal's clothes reportedly caught fire and on hearing her scream, neighbours rushed to her rescue and doused the fire. Rajammal was rushed to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital where she was administered first aid and later sent to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment. Rajammal who was admitted to the intensive care unit with 90 perccent burn injuries succumbed to her injuries, late last night. Her body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem.

Sirumugai police are investigating the fire accident.
