Heavy rains and storms in Karamadai, Coimbatore damages 20 thousand banana trees

Heavy rain accompanied with storms last night in the surrounding panchayats of Mettupalayam,damaged about twenty thousand banana crops and the farmers have requested the government for relief assistance.


Coimbatore: Heavy rains accompanied by cyclonic storm in Coimbatore's Karamadai, damages about 20,000 bananas.



This has distressed the farmers and they have demanded that the government support them with relief assistance.

Tomatoes and banana cultivation is the main occupation in Mettupalayam and surrounding areas of Coimbatore district including Thekkampatti, Velliangadu, Tholampalayam and Kemarampalayam. There are also threats of wild animals damagng the crops in certain areas.

Different types of bananas, including Kathali, Nendran and Poovan, have been cultivated in thousands of acres of land in these areas.



Meanwhile, the surrounding areas of Panapalayampudur under Mettupalayam and Kemarampalayam panchayats experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by cyclonic winds last night. As a result, power supply was cut off in many places.



About 20,000 banana seedlings cultivated in Panapalayampudur area were destroyed at the time of harvest due to heavy rains last night along with the cyclonic storm.



The farmers have demanded that the government should provide adequate compensation to them, as they have lost income.
