A group of theatre artists from Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Stage Artists' Association arrived at the city Police Commissioner's office, dressed as Kalaignar and Anna, and sought permissions to stage plays and dramas at temple festivals in Coimbatore alone

Coimbatore: Theatre artistes dressed as Anna and Kalaignar submitted a petition to the city police commissioner's office seeking permission to perform plays and stage performances in temple festivals.

A group of theatre artists from Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Stage Artists' Association arrived at the city Police Commissioner's office, dressed as Kalaignar Karunanidhi and Perarignar Anna, and sought permissions to stage plays and dramas at temple festivals in Coimbatore alone. They stated that permissions to stage plays are being denied at various places in Coimbatore and also at temples, and requested the Commissioner to take necessary action for the issue.

Ajithraja, State president of the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Stage Dancers' Association(check), said that there are more than 8000 government-recognized stage dancers as members in the association and so far the association has been conducting cultural programmes at temple festivals and stages in a dignified manner.

"For the last two years, we have been pushed into extreme poverty due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic. Though the Government of Tamil Nadu has given permission to stage dancers/ drama artists to perform at temple festivals and platforms in Coimbatore district, permission is being denied to perform at temple festivals in Coimbatore alone.

He said he had submitted a petition requesting that permissions be provided. He regretted that permissions are unavailable only in Coimbatore, while approvals were given in other districts.
