Runway resurfacing work at Coimbatore International Airport begins; No flights from 10 pm to 3 am

Resurfacing work on the runway began in the first week of April.

Coimbatore: Flight operations have been suspended at Coimbatore Airport from 10 pm to 3 am owing to runway resurfacing work.

Coimbatore International Airport caters to travellers from seven districts, in and around Coimbatore. 33 flights were operated daily prior to the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, with 30 lakh people using the airport every year.

After withstanding the onslaught of three Covid-19 waves on its business, the Coimbatore International Airport is now slowly limping back to normalcy. 20 flights are operated daily at present. But all flight services are now being suspended from 10 pm to 3 am due to the resurfacing works being done on the airport runway.

Airport sources said, "The runway at airports is usually renovated every 10 years. Resurfacing work on the runway at Coimbatore International Airport has begun in the first week of April. Due to this, flight operations are banned from 10 pm to 3 am. Flight services were previously operated until 11.30 pm. All flights that were operated after 10 pm have now been rescheduled to land at Coimbatore before 10 pm and depart again.

The 'Air Arabia' flight from Sharjah to Coimbatore arrives at 3.30 am and returns to Sharjah at 4 am, and hence this service will continue. Although night flights are strictly prohibited at Coimbatore International Airport, any flight requesting permission to land due to an emergency will be allowed. Runway resurfacing work is being carried out accordingly," elaborated airport sources.
