Police on security duty at the Collectorate detained them and took the elderly man to the Race Course police station for questioning.

Coimbatore: An elderly man who tried to force a female marriage broker into marrying him by casting aspersions on her character, was beaten up by the woman and her relatives at the Coimbatore Collectorate.

Divya who hails from the Poo Market area of Coimbatore is a marriage broker. A few months ago, she was introduced to Balraj (60), an elderly man who requested her to find a bride for him since he did not have a family of his own.

Divya met Balraj in her house, from time to time, on a strictly professional basis. But Balraj had reportedly lied to people whom Divya was acquainted with that they were in an illicit affair and would soon be marrying each other. He had allegedly also told people that Divya had been in such illicit relationships with many others.

On hearing these rumours, Divya was shocked and confronted Balraj who apparently blackmailed her and tried to force her into marrying him. Divya who knew that Balraj helped people at the District Collectorate confronted him along with her kin at the Collectorate and assaulted him.

The police on security duty at the Collectorate intervened and took Balraj away to the Race Course police station for questioning. The incident caused a stir at the Coimbatore District Collector's Office for a while.
