World Autism Day; City GH holds Awareness program for Autistic children and their parents

An Awareness Program on Autism was held at the government hospital here on World Autism Day for the autistic children and their parents, in which the doctors stated that children shall be ready for a normal life if autism is diagnosed in them under 3 years of age.

World Autism Awareness Day is observed every year on April 2.An awareness programme was held at the District Primary Intervention Services Centre at the Government Medical College Hospital, Coimbatore. It was attended by children with autism and their parents.



The program, presided over by the hospital Dean Nirmala, highlighted that children can be trained to lead a normal life if they are diagnosed with autism by identifying the activities of children below the age of three years, and providing appropriate training at the initial stage. Programmes were also conducted to showcase the experiences of parents and the performance of children with autism undergoing training.

All the children were constantly felicitated with prizes. A large number of people including instructors, doctors, nurses and officers were present on the occasion. The parents who participated in the event were advised that autism is not a disease and if diagnosed, they should not be excluded but should be given regular love and extra care.

According to recent studies, one in 44 children in the world have Autism and three out of four children with Autism are boys.
