Autism is not a mental disease; early detection can help rectify it fully - doctors during World Autism Awareness Program in Coimbatore

An awareness walk to mark World Autism Day was held this morning near the Racecourse Masonic Children's Hospital campus.

Coimbatore: On the eve of World Autism Day, an awareness walk on behalf of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and the Tamil Nadu Branch of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (TNSC) was held at the Racecourse Masonic Children's Hospital premises this morning.

Indian Pediatric Academy Tamil Nadu Branch Secretary, Dr.K. Rajendran led and launched the awareness march.

Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Tamil Nadu Branch, President, Dr. Jayawardena said: -

People do not have enough awareness about autism. We are conducting programs like this to increase it. Autism is a disorder that is affecting more and more people.

Those children can be completely cured if found early. Parents can diagnose autism, especially in children between the ages of one and a half and two and a half.

If so, seek medical attention immediately without delay. By doing so the child will soon be able to recover from that vulnerability and return to normal.

Most parents turn to doctors to treat autism after the age of three or four. This is due to lack of awareness.

On behalf of our academy today we are carrying out various activities to create awareness among the people not just for one day but continuously. People can also contact a doctor immediately if they have any doubts and seek clarification, and begin treatment immediately if necessary.”

Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Tamil Nadu’s Secretary, treasurer and many others including were present on the occasion.
