Detailed Project Report for Coimbatore’s 139-km Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) approved by TN Govt

The feasibility study for Coimbatore Mass rapid transit system is approved by Government of Tamil Nadu and a detailed project report for phase 1 is under finalization by the consultants M/s SYSTRA & RITES Ltd.


Coimbatore: The feasibility study for Coimbatore Mass rapid transit system is approved by Government of Tamil Nadu and a detailed project report for phase 1 is under finalization by the consultantsM/s SYSTRA & RITES Ltd. In this regard a stake holders meeting under the chairmanship of Pradeep Yadav, Managing Director, CMRL and Principal Secretary, Special Initiative Department,Government of Tamil Nadu was held at the District Collector Office on 1/4/2022 at 11.00 am.

1. A detailed presentation of Kovai Metro train facility on the different lines proposed to be created in Coimbatore district was explained.

2. In total 139 kms of the Metro rail will be taken up in three phases by CMRL. Chennai Metro Rail Ltd.

3. First phase will be built for a distance of 44 kms in Avinashi road until PSG iTech from Vellalore via Ukkadam and on Sathyamangalam road until Valiampalayam Pirivu from the Collector’s office.

4. Second phase and third phase work will start after a detailed study and due approvals which will be done simultaneously.

5. Further extension from the existing plan of 139 kms and suggestions to include new areas will betaken under study.

6. Metro will run parallel to the locations in which the flyovers are built and the required Land for the same will be acquired. In places where the flyovers are proposed to be built, CMRL will consider going vertical in a two tier system similar to other places in the country.

7. Stations will be built in locations with sufficient parking facility, escalotors, lift facility, local art , Foot over bridge which can be used for crossing the existing road and other facilities.

8. There is scope to build stations under Public, Private Partnership in preferred locations like Airports, Railway Station, Bus Terminals, Big institutions, Malls and many other places.

9. The accurate location details will be shared by the officials to the respective departments for everyone to understand the situation on ground and help in coordination.

10.The authorities have the expertise of building the Metro facilities in Chennai and they were aware of the different types of challenges in this project. It was good to see them confident of implementing this project in our City for which they seek the support of one and all.

District Collector Dr Sameeran,Corporation Commissioner Rajagopal Sunkara, officials from Special Initiative Department, CMRL and various departments were present in the meeting.
