The water tank in Cheran Ma Nagar area that had been left neglected for the past 10 years has finally been cleaned on the orders issued by Councilor Babu.
Coimbatore: Locals in the Cheran Ma Nagar area of Coimbatore lauded Councillor Kovai Babu for issuing orders that ensured immediate cleaning of a water tank that had been left neglected for over 10 years.
The water tank had become a breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes since it was not maintained for over a decade, reportedly due to the negligence of the AIADMK administration.
Cheran Nagar is located on Vilankurichi Road in Coimbatore and is the residential area for officers and employees of the State Transport Corporation. A total of 568 independent houses have been constructed in three categories A, B and C. The dilapidated water tank near the first bus stop in Cheran Ma Magar where a fence was erected had contaminated water, with overgrown bushes and thus became a breeding ground for mosquitoes during the rainy season.
Though the Corporation had intensified dengue mosquito control measures at various places, no action had been taken to clean the neglected water tank. Post the local polls this year, the Coimbatore Corporation's 22nd Ward Councillor, Kovai Babu decided to take immediate measures to have the water tank cleaned thoroughly.
It is reported that the Municipal Corporation employees who undertook the cleanliness drive for the water tank were in for a shock. Four tractors had to be used for carrying waste from the small area where the water tank is located. When the thorn bushes were cleared, the workers were further shocked to find that the neglected water tank had turned into a mosquito-breeding ground.
"While there was talk about who owns the badly-maintained water tank near Cheran Ma Nagar's first bus stop, I ordered that any area where there is a high risk of spread of diseases ought to be immediately cleaned, keeping in mind public interest. The area is at its worst as expected and is the major reason behind the high rate of dengue-outbreak in the region. Now, the entire premises has been cleaned and even has a new look. stated During the AIADMK rule for the last 10 years, no work including sewerage, road and garbage disposal was ever carried out effectively in Cheran Ma Nagar and surrounding areas which comes under Ward No. 22 of Coimbatore Corporation. Due to their negligence, various problems in the entire area have risen," stated Councillor Kovai Babu.
"Ever since I took over as the Ward Councillor, I have been giving more importance to people's issues in all areas within my Ward. Such activities will continue in the coming days as well. All the problems faced by the people living in Ward No. 22 will be resolved, gradually," reiterated the Councillor.
