Coimbatore: The students of Bharathiar University in Coimbatore boycotted classes and staged a protest demanding adequate security for the girls' hostel.

The girl students at Bharathiar University located on Maruthamalai Road in Coimbatore boycotted classes and staged a protest seeking proper security for the girl's hostel, that is located opposite the university campus.

More than 500 girls are staying in the varsity girls hostel. Over the past few days, the girls, who have been staying in the girls' hostel, had lodged a complaint with the university administration alleging that miscreants were roaming around the hostel with weapons, and no action has been taken so far. Reportedly, a gang of five entered the hostel premises again on Wednesday night, of which one was reported to be naked.

More than 200 students, who are staying at the university hostel, boycotted classes and sat at the entrance of the university. They also raised slogans demanding adequate security for the girl students staying in the university hostels. The students then went to Marudhamalai Road and demanded that the Vice-Chancellor should come in person to ensure the safety of the students.

The police then pacified the students and escorted the protesting women students to the university campus. Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor Kaliraj, who arrived there, held talks with the students. He assured to deploy a separate team of women security and committed that electric lights will be installed around the hostel premises. Till then, he said he would take steps to provide police protection to the hostel. Following this, the students called off the protest.

The sudden protest by the students created a stir for some time.
