ADMK wins indirect elections in Vellalore Town Panchayat in Coimbatore

The indirect elections for the post of Town Panchayat President and Vice President of Vellaore was held on Saturday, 26th March, in which AIADMK has won the posts, and this is the only one Town Panchayt constituency that AIADMK has emerged victorious in out of the 33 Town Panchayats in Coimbatore.


Coimbatore: The AIADMK won the indirect election for the post of President and Vice-President of Vellalore Town Panchayat in Coimbatore and captured the town panchayat.

The indirect elections for the post of President and Vice President was held for Vellalore Town Panchayat on Saturday, 26th March. A clash broke out once again while the election was in progress in Vellalore on Saturday however, AIADMK Candidates managed to grab the posts in the indirect elections.

The DMK alliance won 96 of the 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation, in the recently concluded local polls. The DMK won 31 town panchayats and one town panchayat in 7 municipalities and 33 town panchayats. Although AIADMK had more councillors, the party struggled grabbing the Vellaore town panchayat and the indirect elections were held on Saturday for 62 seats that were left out in the urban local body elections across Tamil Nadu.

Out of the total 15 wards in Vellalore Town Panchayat in Coimbatore, AIADMK won 8 seats, DMK 6 and Independents 1. The election was postponed due to clashes between DMK and AIADMK councillors during the indirect election to the President and Vice President on March 4.

Elections for the post of Vellalore Town Panchayat President and Vice President were held again on Saturday. Heavy police security was deployed near the town panchayat office. However, clashes broke out between DMK and AIADMK, despite police security and the clashes led to a lathi charge by the police. A DMK councillor Gunasundari's husband Senthil Kumar, of Vellalore 4th ward, suffered a skull injury.

He refused seeking medical help and instead indulged in shouting slogans against the police. A police vehicle was damaged in the clash. The police chased everyone away. Additional police is deployed. Meanwhile, Parthiban's skull was injured in a lathi charge by the police. Rajendran was also rushed to the hospital with injuries on his leg.

Following the elections, six DMK councillors and an independent councillor staged a walkout demanding the conduct of the polls after the arrest of AIADMK workers who attacked DMK functionaries. AIADMK's Marudachalam, won the election for President in the morning in Vellalore town panchayat and AIADMK member Ganesan won the vice-president's election unopposed. The results were announced in the afternoon.

Of the 33 town panchayats in Coimbatore district, the AIADMK has emerged victorious only in one town panchayat. Speaking to reporters, Town Panchayat President Marudachalam said, that "Justice triumphed and this time the officials were also honest. We are going to do all the work that people need and people have faith in us," he said.
