The forest department is investigating the death of an 8-year-old female leopard near Valparai. Wild animals like elephant tigers, leopards, deer, bears, lion tail, monkeys, etc are found in the Valparai area, frequently. Sensing a foul smell in the 21st tea estate in Stanmore Estate near Valparai, tea plantation workers informed the forest department.
Manampalli forest ranger Manikandan visited the spot and found a leopard in a decomposed state. The body of the leopard was cremated in the presence of forest vet Sukumaran. According to estimates, the leopard is said to be about an eight to 10 year old, female. The forest officers speculate that the animal must have died due to old age.
Later, the forest department set fire to the body of the leopard at the Wildlife Human Conflict Prevention Committee center. Forest activists added that wildlife deaths have been on the rise in the recent past.
