Coimbatore: Shower baths, splashing water through sprayers, fresh fruits, and vegetables, watermelon, and ice creams are the feasts the animals at VOC Park in the city enjoy to beat the heat as summer starts early in Coimbatore.

Summer has not been a pleasant season to welcome, especially for the people in Coimbatore, a city famous for its cool weather. The tables have turned and the heat began as early as February, and in March due to the shedding of numerous trees for road extension, development, etc, and the locals throng hill stations to beat the heat. However, the animals in the VOC Zoo have been fighting summer, as they are unable to move like humans, and with the early onset of the season this year, arrangements have been made to keep them cool.

The impact of the sun was not much as it is expected to rain in the first week of April. But since the beginning of March this year, the temperature has crossed 50 degrees. As early as April, the sun's impact increases.

The V.O.C. Zoo in Coimbatore has birds including ducks, pigeons among others. Apart from the birds, the zoo also houses animals and snakes including moose, monkeys and camels. These birds and animals are suffering a lot due to the increased impact of the sun.

For the past few days, they have been enjoying a shower bath through water sprayers. The inmates of the zoo are given a water bath in the morning or afternoon.

If the summer heat increases, it is also planned to be held twice. Snakes have also been placed in a large-scale can filled with water, to keep them cool and the diets have undergone a change, with monkeys slurping through ice creams and watermelons. Fresh veggies and fruits are being fed to the ducks, deer, rats, peacocks etc.

A special sprayer has been set to reduce heat. Park staff said the practice would be followed till the impact of the sun subsides.
