Selva Magal Semippu Thittam; 80,000 accounts opened at post offices in Coimbatore

With 9,800 accounts opened last year, 80,000 accounts have been opened at the Post Offices for girl children under the Selva Magal Semippu Thittam in the district.



Coimbatore: The Selva Magal Semippu Thittam of the Government of India, has been enabling the parents of girl children to open savings accounts at the post office, and a total of 80,000 accounts have been opened at the post offices in Coimbatore under the scheme.



Bank accounts were opened at the Head Post Office on Goods Shed Road in Coimbatore with the participation of 100 girls studying in government schools under the Selvamagal Semippu Thittam of the Government of India.



The post office officials distributed the account passbooks to the children and their parents.



Speaking on the occasion, the Coimbatore Regional Postal Officers said, "There are 89 post offices in Coimbatore alone. In the last one year alone, accounts have been opened for 9,800 girl children under the Selvamagal Semippu Thittam and around 80,000 accounts have been opened since 2012."



A private company owner who has taken up the initiative to help people stated that while a bank account has been opened for 100 children studying in government schools with his contribution under the Scheme, he will open accounts for about 1,000 girl children next year.
