Solar power producers in Tamil Nadu have welcomed the centre's decision to provide storage facilities in the renewable energy generation sector to meet the power needs in summer.
Coimbatore: Solar power producers in Tamil Nadu have welcomed the centre's decision to provide storage facilities in the renewable energy generation sector to meet the power needs in summer.
The Central and State Government have decided to set up storage facilities in the renewable power generation sectors, through which the power generated during the day shall be used for the night. The renewable energy generation sector, including solar and wind, plays a very important role in meeting the ever-increasing demand for electricity. The demand for electricity in Tamil Nadu during summer is high. More than 15,000 MW of electricity are consumed daily. In Tamil Nadu, there are infrastructure facilities to generate 8,000 MW of power in the wind power generation sector and 4,000 MW in the solar power generation sector.
Apart from this, industries operate at night. The central and state governments have recently taken a decision keeping all this in mind. All power producers in the renewable energy generation sector have been advised to set up storage facilities and distribute them for use at night.
Sastha M Raja, treasurer of The Tamil Nadu Solar Power Producers Association (TANSPA), said, that wind power generation in Tamil Nadu is available only in five or six months every year. But, the work of generating electricity through sunlight will continue throughout the year. At present, the electricity generated during the day is supplied to the Electricity Board during the day.
"Recently, the Central and State Governments have decided to provide storage facility in the renewable energy generation sector and distribute the electricity generated during the day at night.
Power producers have been instructed to set up storage infrastructure. A project like this is very welcome. But in today's scenario, more funds will be required to provide storage infrastructure for solar power producers in Tamil Nadu."
He added that the Government of Tamil Nadu is getting the electricity supplied during the day at a premium rate. Similarly, if the government comes forward to buy 30% premium rate for storage power, all solar power producers in Tamil Nadu will come forward immediately to set up storage infrastructure, which will greatly benefit the Government of Tamil Nadu. With the onset of summer, all power producers will start the work of providing storage infrastructure if the Tamil Nadu government makes an announcement soon.
