Doctors at KG Hospitals Coimbatore perform novel surgery for Aortic Valve Replacement

The surgeons at the KG Hospitals in Coimbatore have performed a novel Aortic Valve Replacement surgery, for the first time in Tamil Nadu on a 72-year-old female.

Coimbatore:The surgeons at the KG Hospitals in Coimbatore have performed a novel Aortic Valve Replacement surgery, for the first time in Tamil Nadu on a 72-year-old female.

A 72 year female patient from Tirupur with Congestive Cardiac Failure was diagnosed with Severe Calcific Aortic Stenosis, normal coronaries and Borderline LV function. She opted for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery. CT Scan revealed ascending aorta was midline and to the left. Realising that performing AVR would be difficult through Right paramedian incision, the doctors took her for Aortic valve replacement through Right Axillary Approach; A Novel technique for patients with aorta to the left of sternum.

Aortic Valve was replaced with a Bioprosthetic valve. She made good recovery and was discharged on the 6th post operative day.

KG Hospital is said to be the first and only hospital in Tamil Nadu to perform Axillary incision for Aortic Valve Replacement through Minimally Invasive method. The hospital has completed more than 250 Cardiac surgeries by Minimally Invasive method with 100 percent success rate till date.

The surgeons stated that the Axillary incision for Aortic valve replacement gives excellent exposure of the aorta and aortic valve. The valve sutures can be tied down as done in the conventional approach. Recovery is fast with minimal pain and gives the best cosmetic result.

A full medial sternotomy (dividing the breast bone) has always been the standard surgical approach for heat surgeries. A full sternotomy usually provides good exposure to heart and vessels, and allows central cannulation for cardio-pulmonary bypass for any cardiac surgery procedure. This is said to leave a 9-12 inches scar on the chest. However, of late there has been cases of less invasive technique for cardiac valve surgery through small incisions, with safety and good results. Advantages of following a Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery include

• Shorter recovery period, patients feel better earlier and return to their normal

• Post operative discomfort is less

• Shorter hospital stay

• Lower risk of wound infection

• The restriction and limitation on lifting weights do not apply as with traditional surgery

• Cosmetically excellent by comparison Surgeries performed through Minimally Invasive Approach

• Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement

• Aortic Valve Replacement

• Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (for selected patients)

• Bentall’s procedure (for selected patients)

• Ascending Aortic Arch Replacement (for selected patients)
