Urban Local Body Election; 224 polling booths tagged sensitive in Tirupur

The urban local body elections were announced for 440 ward posts viz., Tirupur Corporation, Palladam, Kangayam, Vellakoil, Udumalpet, Dharapuram and Thirumuruganpoondi, starting from Chamalapuram Town Panchayat and 15 Town Panchayats in the district including Kunnathur, Rudravati, Avinashi, Utukuli, Kumaralingam, Mathukkulam and Thali.

Out of this, 20 were elected unopposed including 13 candidates in Udumalai municipality, 13 in Chinnakampalayam Town Panchayat, one in Madathukulam Town Panchayat, one in Kolatupalayam Town Panchayat, 2 in Rudravati Town Panchayat and 19 in the Above Town Panchayats each in Mulanur and Muttur Town Panchayats.

Elections are held for 420 wards across the district today. At present, a total of 1,920 candidates are contesting elections in 420 wards across the district, 494 in municipal corporations, 661 in municipalities and 765 in Town Panchayats.

There are 163 polling stations for male voters, 163 polling stations for women voters and 450 polling stations for all voters in 60 wards in Tirupur Corporation. Out of which 151 polling stations are declared as sensitive.

A total of 224 sensitive polling stations are identified in Tirupur Municipal Corporation, Municipality and Town Panchayats.

In the elections to be held in the district today, there are 5,66,178 male voters, 5,65,995 women voters and 199 from other communities.

A total of 1299 polling stations will vote today: 776 polling stations in the city, 279 polling stations in 6 municipalities and 244 polling stations in Town Panchayats will be used for the elections. 1299 EVMs as well as 1299 control machines will be used.

Election department officials said 20 per cent reserved EVMs would be used if any of these machines were faulty.
