Coimbatore: DMK and SDPI party men clashed during the last day of campaigning in the city, near Kottaimedu area ward 82, after which 9 members of the SDPI party have been booked.

M Bashira is contesting the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation elections in Ward 82, Kottaimedu on behalf of DMK and Rashida Begum for SDPI. Reportedly, 9 members of the SDPI have been booked after the dispute between DMK and SDPI during yesterday’s campaign. A functionary from the SDPI party stated that they had availed permissions for campaigning at Kottaimedu area between 4 pm and 5 pm on 17th February, but the DMK members who had the 5 pm to 6 pm slot on purpose arrived prior to the time and created confusion.

He stated that DMK raised slogans and argued deliberately with SDPI members abusing them. He added that nine SDPI persons have been booked after a clash that escalated, while DMK abused SDPI men.

On the other hand, the DMK men stated that they had obtained permission for campaigning in the area from 3 pm to 6 pm. Reportedly the DMK men stopped chanting slogans while they crossed the SDPI campaign meeting.

It was due to the allegation of SDPI calling DMK corrupt, and would create bloodshed in the state, the clash broke out. The SDPI members attacked DMK men with the flag poles they carried and the injured are admitted to the government hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

A case has been registered against nine persons for the attack.
