Excess parking charges collected at Coimbatore airport affects public; non-Tamil language speakers in collection causes further anguish

The passengers, public arriving at the Coimbatore International Airport suffer discomfort as the parking charges collected are above the stipulated amount, and have stated that the omnipresence of non-tamil speaking guest workers is further causing anguish as they cannot stake their claim to them.

Coimbatore: The excess collection of parking charges at the Coimbatore International Airport is a major inconvenience for passengers and the public. The presence of northern state workers as in charges for collecting parking fees at the Coimbatore International Airport has resulted in a huge inconvenience, as most commuters are forced to pay the amount asked as they do not speak Tamil or English.

The Coimbatore International Airport is used by the public from 7 districts surrounding Coimbatore and before the pandemic 36 flights were operated on a daily basis. The air traffic is reduced to 14 due to Covid19, and International flights are operated to Singapore, Sharjah. The domestic flights operate to destinations like Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad.

Families and friends arrive at the airport to drop the passengers and a parking to accommodate 100 cars has been constructed at the airport. There is no charge if the public leaves within three minutes ₹20 is collected for the first half an hour.

In case the vehicle is parked at the premises for above half-an-hour, ₹60 is collected and this is the authorized parking amount to be collected. However, there have been repeated complaints stating the parking in charges collect ₹60 way before half an hour is complete, and the public is unable to either argue or explain the parking lot employees due to a language barrier. The workers from the northern states are employed at the parking lot, their dominance has been high. Senthil Valavan, the Coimbatore Airport Director, upon the issue raised stated, “There have been some complaints regarding improper charging in the parking area of the airport premises. I have directed the airport authorities to immediately increase the surveillance work. Apart from this, action has been taken to place the complaint box and provide mobile phone numbers to complain about improper parking charges.”

He also stated that he held talks with the parking contractor and ordered that there should be activities so that no such complaint is received. Stating that passenger welfare cannot be compromised, he said that only ₹ 20 will be collected for the first half an hour, and beyond that ₹ 60 will be collected.

He added that 'Passengers can immediately contact the authorities at the airport premises to lodge a complaint when faced with any such problems. Appropriate action will be taken immediately.'
