Three members from the transgender community from Coimbatore have officially joined the home guards sector of Tamil Nadu after 45 days of training


Coimbatore: Three members from the transgender community from Coimbatore have officially joined the home guards sector of Tamil Nadu after undergoing 45 days of training.

P Varunashree, (21), of Sirumugai, S Manju, (29), of Telugupalayam, and Sujitra Panneerselvam, (27), of Podanur Chettipalayam are currently working for the home guard for Coimbatore city.

Coimbatore District (Rural) Superintendent of Police S Selvanagathinam made an effort to recruit transgenders. There were 110 vacant posts in the Coimbatore district home guard. Based on the SP’s instructions, the members of the transgender community were informed about the appointment.

A total of 15 transgenders participated in recruitment process and three of them were recruited. They have completed 45 days of training before joining the service on Saturday, stated Balaji Raju, Area Commander, Coimbatore District Home Guard.

Those employed will be sent to various tasks including traffic regulation and bandobast duties. They will also do their duty during the upcoming urban local body elections.

At present, 387 members of the Coimbatore district home guard include 332 men, 52 women, and 3 transgenders.
